As a chapter ends...
After 15 years, it is time to leave the nest (close our doors) as the Bluebird is off to new adventures! Read the farewell letter below for details.
We expect this to be a very busy time for us both physically and mentally, as such please note the changes below:
- Online fabric yardage now has a 1 yard minimum.
- The closing sale will be running simultaneously online and in-person. If there is a conflict between our in-person sales and the website it will go to the in-person customer. If this does occur, we will reach out to you.
- If the difference between what you ordered and what we have in stock is 1 yard or more we will contact by email, if the difference is less than a yard we will ship what we have and reduce the bill to match quantity shipped. Leave a comment at checkout if you need exact yardage.
- All sales final.
We have no final date set. Our doors will close once we are empty, which we expect to before the end of December.
I have been so happy to share the love of quilting with so many people most of my life and specifically with my store Bluebird Quilts & Gallery. I had planned that my retirement would include my husband at the store, however that was interrupted with his death two and half years ago. I vowed not to make any major “life” changes or decisions immediately upon his death.
Over more than 15 years of owning this store, I have seen and dealt with the stress of daily operations along with 3 break-ins, persevered as an essential business through a pandemic and the dealt with the lack of encouragement by the quilt industry for being a store that does not operate on Saturdays (even while we provided a place on Sundays when other stores were not open). Even through all this, my prayers have been for the business, and most importantly the people - staff and customers to experience happiness, creativity, and success.
I have also been blessed to realize a dream of store ownership! And with that, been able to see great things: 1). In the faces of those that find similar happiness in quilting and learning to quilt. 2). In the amazing staff that supports me and works as a cohesive team unit. 3). And most definitely with the customers that offer encouragement and their support over the years. Further, to realize that my store was more than just a retail store with the charity work that we participated in. For example, charity sewing Sundays benefitting both Stephen’s Hope for Children in Fontana, California as well as Ryan’s Cases for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) in the Inland Empire, in addition to other projects. I am grateful to know we made a difference in other’s lives.
I have felt that we were a safe place for many. More times than I can count the number of people that needed a sensitive ear to hear special life challenges, be it personal frustrations over work, family or whatever, no matter how big or small. One of my favorite (and humorous) memories was a day before Thanksgiving when someone came running in and grabbed the bolt of fabric right out of my hands, hugged it and while petting it said with a huge sigh, “Ah, now I feel better!” Or the times with one-on-one learning while standing by someone’s side dealing with family or personal medical care and how they needed something else to focus on while also traveling through the overpowering path life was handing them. What a privilege to be there at those times and yes, even when grief comes. I feel honored that we were there when a hug was just the thing to get someone through the day. Those memories are precious which I will hold as cherished and dear!
Even with the good, I realize now that providing quality product, class opportunities and amazing personal service in the changing world where the internet “grab an item cheaper”, or “learn on YouTube for free” has created more demand of my time than I can give to meet that challenge. I still applaud and show great joy in your accomplishments, and care for you and the world you must face. However, it is time for me to abandon the nest and close Bluebird Quilts & Gallery doors.
So let the sales begin for which many will be happy for the bargains. Even as we part, I will still give a “Happy Stitching” send off to one and all!
-Bluebird Janet
